MCJ HAPPY HOURS

30th May 2008, The Flannigan Irish Pub, Sari Pan Pacific

For the 1st Monthly Gathering for year 2008/9 and the EXCO wanted it to be a fun and relaxing event where members just come and gather for fun, networking or catching up with old friends in the MCJ community.  We are fortunate to have Mr. Ashok who volunteers to takes up the responsibility of being the Director of Social Events and organized the 1st Happy Hour in the series that he plans to organize monthly.  For this event in Flannigan Irish Pub, we had FREE flow of beers sponsored by Ashok’s company throughout the night.

We had about 60 members and guests gathered together for a free and easy dinner followed by karaoke, dancing, pool games and lots of beers.  Our Ambassador and wife, Dato and Datin Zainal Abidin, came at about 9pm after their series of official functions to give their support to our 1st monthly gathering and the new EXCO.  We thank them for their presences in spite of their extremely busy schedule. The night started with the usual registration, money collections and easy mingling amongst the guests attended.  At about 8.45pm before the Band starts playing, we took the opportunity for the new EXCO to officially introduce themselves and then some first time attending members to say a few words.  At 9pm sharp, the Band starts playing a few songs before we have our 1st contribution from our Mr. President, Bp Hazmi, to kick start the karaoke session.  Continuing on we have contributors like Dato’, Halim, Elona, Cass (our Singaporean friend) and our most senior member cum Auditor Mr. Ong Piau Meng.  Photos in our album would show how much fun everyone had in the bar even those who do not drink had a blast with the joyous entertainment.

All the patrons had so much fun from the entertainment, company and FREE flow of beers that the last group of members adjourned only at 1.15am together with the Band.  Many members expressed that this was the BEST gathering that they have in a very long time and look forward to the next series of HAPPY HOURs!!!! Therefore, Mr. Ashok, you have to prepare yourself with more fun and entertaining session in the next one… You have set a high standard with this fun and entertaining event!

The Malaysia Club Jakarta (MCJ) is pleased to announce a very special event organized in association with the International Business Council (“IBC”) for all its Members on Thursday, 17th January 2008. IBC is a grouping of all the major business associations, chamber of commerce, business clubs like AMCHAM, BRITCHAM, SAI, and MCJ who are members and is the central business voice dealing with the Indonesian government on policy matters.

The roaring success of the first “Meet the Press” event held last year prompted many requests for another similar event and we have done even better this time.

This event is called “Business & the Media – Conflict or Cooperation? Towards Achieving a better Climate” is aimed at providing the foreign business community a chance to have an insight on how the press works in Indonesia and the current thinking of the Press.

Jakarta, November 6, 2007

Despite the rain and the heavy traffic congestion and taking from Puan Hamidah’s farewell speech ‘padat merayap’ (perhaps it should be ‘pamer paha’ or padat merayap tanpa harapan), MCJ members, family and friends braved the stressful ride to be at Mario’s Place to attend the November gathering themed “A tribute to Puan Hamidah”. She will be leaving Jakarta in mid November for her new posting in Perth. You may want to know that Puan Hamidah is the Counselor/Head of Chancery at the Malaysian Embassy and she is the embassy’s rep in MCJ EXCO.

Fun filled “Kalah OK’ fun PDF Print E-mail

Jakarta, July 17, 2007

It was a night filled with laughter, singing and good fun for the 40 odd members that attended last nights MCJ gathering complimented by the buffet served at Amigos Kemang that certainly had our bellies filled with some nice TexMex goodness. The “Kalah OK” event is a departure from the traditional events MCJ has been organizing and will be an annual event to be held in July to allow our members and friends to enjoy themselves. This event was no different and provided plenty of fun and laughter. It was also a departure from the traditional karaoke sing song but this time it was a true music event with a live band.

The highly billed ‘Kalah OK’ event kick-start with Joe! being the MC for the night rendering ‘a funny with a twist’ song, and mind you without the music, where it got all of us laughing almost falling off their chairs (Editor’s note: if you want the lyrics, write to Joe!). During the course of the night, Joe! Entertained the audience with a selection of songs including “Chan Mali Chan” and “A Ceylonese/Tamil” number in the name of intermission. Anyway, great stuff Joe!

Monthly Gathering Highlight - June 2007 PDF Print E-mail

Grab from www. theunspunblog.com
The Malaysia Club in Jakarta last night signaled a more business orientation with it first business gathering a dinner talk featuring well-known business blogger Yosef Ardi (photo, right) and The Jakarta Post Managing Editor Riyadi Suparno as speakers. Malaysian Ambassador Zainal Abidin Mohamed Zain took time off from his diplomatic rounds to drop by.
The two senior journalists spoke on the theme Business and the Press and provided many insights to the 50 plus participants, mostly Malaysian professionals and entreprenuers. Of particular interest is an observaton by one of the speakers that Indonesian have the perception that Malaysians make better investors in Indonesia than Singaporeans. Malaysians, he said, are perceived to reinvest their profits in the businesses here while Singaporeans are prone to take back the money.
There is also an affinity for Malaysians as they are perceived to come from the same stock. Generally, Indonesians view Malaysia and Malaysians favorably unless someone here plays up nationalistic themes such as Ambalat. Then reason goes out the window and fanned emotions prevail.
A Malaysian participant complained that for all the professed affinity Malaysians still had poor coverage in the media. Hmmm…perhaps the Malaysians need to do more PR?
