The idea of starting the Malaysia Club in Jakarta began soon after Dato’ Abdullah Zamawi took up his appointment as Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia in August 1989.  During an informal dinner with Malaysian businessman Ting Huong Sing, Dato’ Zamawi said he would like to meet more Malaysian business people who are living and working in Jakarta.  Since Mr. Ting’s business were based in Sarawak and West Kalimantan and visited Jakarta only occasionally, he enlisted the help of David Wong and Robert Ting to organize a welcome dinner party for Dato’ Zamawi.

Over a hundred invitations were sent out to Malaysians residing in Jakarta under auspices of the Malaysian Business Community in Jakarta, which also funded the occasion.  The dinner was held in Hilton Hotel on October 19, 1989 with an overwhelming response of close to a hundred participants and at the dinner it was proposed to establish a Malaysian Club in Jakarta to promote the interest of Malaysian business people and also to strengthen the links between Malaysian residents in Indonesia and the based Malaysian diplomats.  With the unreserved support of Dato’ Zamawi, a pro-tem committee elected that very night with Ting Huong Sing as chairman and Dr. S. Sethu, Abu Bakar Tambi, Ting Huong Sing and David Wong as members.  They decided to call it the Malaysian Business Club, which inaugural meeting at the Indonesian Petroleum Club, in Jakarta, on February 17, 1990.  Ting was elected president to head the nine member executive committee.  The club had only 30 members and existed for another two years under the name the Malaysian Business Club.

On April 21, 1992, the club held its third annual meeting in which its members unanimously passed a resolution to change its name to the Malaysian Club Jakarta (MCJ).  The aim of the name change was to reflect a widening of the club’s scope of activities to include improving community and social relations among all Malaysians residing in Indonesia, it was also intended to encourage greater participation by Malaysians who are not directly involved in business.  The club has since prospered, thanks to the unwavering support of Dato’ Abdullah Zamawi and his successor, Dato’ Dali Hasim, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Alias, and Dato’ Rastam Mohd. Isa , Dato’ Hamidon Ali and the current Ambassador, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Zain  who is the present Ambassador to Indonesia.  Thanks also go to the assistance and cooperation given by many of the Embassy staff and dedication and hard work put in by successive Exco members of the club.

With the infusion of an increasing number of Malaysian expatriates in Indonesia, a new generation of dynamic Exco members has emerged over the past few years that have sought to widen the scope and number of activities of the club.  It is hoped that with the enthusiasm of the club, Malaysian Club Jakarta will play yet a more important and successful role in the lives of expatriates living in Indonesia.
